Briggs Houze

Located in Grand Circus Park, the historical Hotel Briggs once boasted Detroit’s most modern amenities, with every room beautifully decorated and cozy . Newspaper advertisements illustrate the hotel’s prestige + popularity the year it opened[1].

Today, the freshly renovated Briggs Houze is once again accepting occupants. Barbat Holdings is repurposing numerous historical buildings throughout the city for their Houze Living sites, creating the go-to places for living in Detroit.

This particular gem sits on W Adams Avenue (just off of Woodward), within walking distance to every facet of the Detroit scene: Comerica Park, Ford Field, and Little Caesars Arena; The Fillmore, Fox Theatre, and Detroit Opera House; and even further with People Mover and QLine stops within the block.

With a design concept intended to blend the aged (im)perfections of the hotel’s historical features with modern elements, the development of this space is completely unique to the context of its location.

Restoration of the historical lobby (once shared with the neighboring Oriental Theater) included preservation of the terrazzo floor and original phone booths.

The original terrazzo floor is incorporated into the updated lobby design, which includes contemporary furniture + wood elements.

To accommodate long-term residents, the original hotel rooms + suites were transformed into studio and 1-2 bedroom apartments by adding kitchen space. But we also kept a little bit of history in these units- preserving the crown molding and bathroom tile work to connect each tenant with a piece of Detroit’s past.

Hotel rooms were transformed into apartments by adding kitchens + other updates.

If you like what we did here- wait until you see what else we’re doing with Houze!
